Ukrainians in Cavan honored the Holodomor Victims

On November 26, 2022, the Ukrainian community in Cavan, as part of the work of the Ukrainian Saturday School, held an event for children and parents on the Day of Remembrance of the Holodomor Victims.

Our teachers Oksana Pasychnik and Yulia Shapoval told the children about this tragic period in the history of the Ukrainian people: “These were terrible years in the history of our country. It was the Holodomor. And so we must honor the memory of the victims of the Holodomor. It was a time when food, livestock were taken by force from people, gardens were cut down. Why did it happen so? Because then there was another government in Ukraine – the Soviet one, who hated the Ukrainian people, and dreamed of its destruction.”

The children were explained why it is very important to value food: “We must remember that food, and especially bread is a great value, and we must treat food with great respect. Because in those difficult times, both children and adults dreamed of even a small piece of bread … Therefore, they cannot be scattered and every crumb must be respected.”

At the end of the event, the kids made flowers of memory and lit candles with thoughts of the dead and with the hope that this will never happen again.

This day of remembrance is very important for us Ukrainians. Moreover, wherever we are, we must know the history of our people; remember both happy and sad periods. We sincerely believe that our event planted in the hearts of children the seeds of understanding and compassion for those who had to live during the Holodomor.

We appeal to all Ukrainians now living in Ireland, to our Ukrainian society in Cavan: come to our events, follow the events and news! We must get to know each other, unite, be stronger, and support each other! For only together we can help our countrymen in Ukraine, help our army, help our Motherland win!
